Background of the Study:
Inter-ethnic marriages in Oredo Local Government have become increasingly prevalent in recent decades, reflecting the dynamic interplay of diverse cultural traditions in a rapidly modernizing society. Such unions are often seen as opportunities for cultural exchange and social integration, yet they also raise concerns about the dilution of distinct ethnic identities (Ogbonna, 2023). Traditional cultural markers—such as language, rituals, and social customs—can be influenced by the blending of different ethnic backgrounds, which may lead to both enrichment and conflict within family and community settings (Akinola, 2024). Recent studies have shown that while inter-ethnic marriages promote tolerance and multiculturalism, they can also create challenges related to identity preservation and cultural continuity (Efe, 2025). This study critically examines the dual-edged effects of such marriages, seeking to understand how they contribute to evolving cultural identities while also posing challenges to traditional cultural heritage (Ogbonna, 2023).
Statement of the Problem:
The increasing rate of inter-ethnic marriages in Oredo has raised questions about the long-term impact on cultural identity. Conflicts may arise as traditional practices are modified or abandoned, leading to tensions within communities and challenges in maintaining cultural distinctiveness (Akinola, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To investigate the impact of inter-ethnic marriages on cultural identity.
To assess the benefits and challenges associated with cultural integration.
To recommend measures for balancing cultural diversity and identity preservation.
Research Questions:
What effects do inter-ethnic marriages have on cultural identity in Oredo?
How do families navigate cultural differences arising from such marriages?
What strategies can support the preservation of distinct cultural identities?
Research Hypotheses:
Inter-ethnic marriages contribute to the hybridization of cultural identities.
The blending of cultural practices leads to both positive integration and identity conflicts.
Structured cultural programs can help mitigate identity dilution.
Significance of the Study:
This study highlights the complex implications of inter-ethnic marriages for cultural identity, offering insights into how diverse societies can balance integration with cultural preservation. Its findings are valuable for community policymakers and cultural institutions (Efe, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the examination of the effects of inter-ethnic marriages on cultural identity in Oredo Local Government, Edo State.
Definitions of Terms:
Inter-ethnic Marriage: A marital union between individuals of different ethnic backgrounds.
